of the people who here today. we're blessed to have leader nancy pelosi here. who has been a huge leader. [ applause ] mayor lee, and it seems like we might have a quorum with the board of supervisors. i'm sure there is no work getting done over there today because we have been blessed with so many. supervisor kim, supervisor yeee, supervisor cohen and supervisor dufty and those are just too name a few. for mercy, these opportunitis are just few and far between. we were talking earlier, barry and i about how many people st. anthony's sees on a regular basis. these 89 affordable housing units and one manager's unit is an unbelievable accomplishment. and the sad thing it's just a drop in the bucket compared to the need we have. i think all of you know that, which is why you are here today. we're blessed to have the leader here today and i wish all your colleagues in congress could be as supportive as you have been over the years so people would understand the need. unfortunately with the situation that we have nationally, the funding for programs like this are really stretched and there is
overwhelmed today to be sharing the same stage with nancy pelosi, ed lee, susan coretand to look out here and see this sea of humanity and have people cheering for me. [ applause ] i'm overwhelmed and i'm humbled because just four years, nine months and six days ago, i was smoking crack. that is right. i was a drug addict. and almost five years later, here i am. miracles do happen! [ applause ] 60 years ago father alfred had a vision. it started with his compassion for those in need. the vision was and still is for those in need to come out of poverty, and to thrive. this vision since 1950 has been giving those in need the natural and the spiritual food that they need in order to thrive. i am now thriving because of the vision of father alfred. [ applause ] >> i came through st. anthony's through the father alfred center, the drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and i was instilled with values and morals that i was separated from through my drug use. after coming to the father alfred center they put me to work in the dining center. i was not easy work, but gratifying and i got to hear
and into the congress and wait our magical 60 to 90 days and lees give a warm welcome leader nancy pelosi. [applause] >> who is also keeping track on the giants. >> you know mr. mayor i always listen attentively to every world you say but i know you want me to say it's the bottom of the ninth and one out and in a matter of minutes we have another cause for celebration and you said jam san francisco didn't happen last week. we may have another potential for this weekend as well. thank you mr. mayor for your kind words. thank you everyone for the role you played in making this important day possible. i am here with my son paul and he can attest to the fact we are part of the 30 stockton crowd. we used to take it downtown and we would say "here comes the bus. there goes the bus". because it was always crowded mr. secretary. it would always be crowded and today is one things that contributes to the mobility of families, bringing people to work to play and improve their quality of life. secretary lahood has been one of the truest friends to san francisco. he has been a leader that has -- [applause
leadership, senator feinstein, nancy pelosi and mayor lee and the board of supervisors to chairman nol an from the sfmta. i am on pins and needles. do we have anything else to report? it's still at the same point we think they're in commercials. i am reminded from the song from "top gun" "take my breath away" and $942 million takes my breath away and i think to mayor lee for that amount i think we should get a leather flight jacket to thank mr. lahood for the great gift to our great city. the new money that is going to be used here is going to create 1,000 new jobs before the end of the year with many more jobs to come after that. that is something to applaud. thank you again secretary lahood for that. this is one point 7 miles very similar to the length of the golden gate bridge when 75 years ago that was going to be built and little did we know what that bridge would bring to the economy of san francisco and marin and as we look ahead for 75 years it's interesting what this does for this region. you know the bay area has become the blue angels of science. we do lots of stunt
], thank you. you've had a big part of this. and enterprise community. nancy pelosi's office and staff, they've been with us lockstepfighting for dollars. our pd, our fire, our first responders, our friends and also many that work at hud, staff, residents like coordinators, the list can go on and on because we definitely need to acknowledge these, that this is a multi-, multilevel approach. i also want to pay my respects to former supervisor sophie maxwell who also had the vision and leadership to get this project started forward. also had the foresight to tear down that power plant that was polluting our community. so, we really are where -- we are today is a culmination of small, little incremental steps that we have been taking for the last 40 years. 40 years is a long time, but now we need to think about the future and going forward and take pride and protect our investment, protect our children, shop locally, the businesses and restaurants that are happening and coming in on 3rd street. this is an exciting time, not a time for us to be fearful, but to collectively move in boldly a
